Volunteers will be handing out TBS membership forms for those interested in becoming a member of TBS. We will also hand out free copies of the TPWD booklet, "Bluebirds in Texas", which includes plans for a bluebird nestbox well-suited for Texas conditions. Donations and pickup of their free nestbox will be outside the park at a location to be disclosed near the park.

Walking tours within the park to view nestlings will be conducted on the hour starting at 2pm with the last one at 5pm. Our booth is located near the restrooms in space 17. Be sure to look for the Texas red, white and blue lone star canopy.

Bluebirds are feeding nestlings in several nestboxes, so every visitor should see a bluebird (weather permitting).

Take State Highway 47 North through Wills Point to FM 2475 and continue for approximately 4 miles.

Pauline Tom is President of the Texas Bluebird Society and has conducted popular workshops on bluebird husbandry in many different parts of the state. Her workshop will cover the following:

- best practices for nest-box installation to attract Eastern Bluebirds
- how to recognize and improve appropriate habitat for Eastern Bluebirds
- how to interpret bluebird activity outside of the nest-box
- how to deter predators and alien competitors
- the process of egg-laying and incubation
- how to “age” nestlings
- record-keeping / record-sharing with NestWatch

During the workshop, Pauline will take participants outdoors to view bluebird habitat and man-made nest-boxes.
Workshop fee is $15 for TAS members and $20 for non-members. Older teens are welcome and younger with an adult.

The SFA gardens at Stephen F. Austin University will host its monthly Theresa and Lee Reeves Lecture Series with Naturalist, Keith Kridler, of Mt. Pleasant, Texas, presenting "Bluebirds Chase My Blues Away."

Mr. Kridler is co-founder of the Texas Bluebird Society and co-author of The Bluebirds Monitor Guide. He maintains an extensive bluebird trail in northeast Texas with hundreds of nestboxes and lectures widely on the subject. He is also a Master Gardener, a commercial daffodil farmer, and an officer in the Texas Daffodil Society.

The Theresa and Lee Reeves Garden Lecture Series is generally held the third Thursday of each at the SFA Mast Arboretum. Refreshments are served by the SFA volunteers before the lecture with a rare plant raffle being held afterward. The lecture is free and open to the public.

The monthly Hornsby Bend Bird Observatory Bird Survey takes place this Saturday May 14 at Hornsby Bend.

Since the 14th is International Migratory Bird Day, the public is encouraged to participate on novice to expert teams. Come help count the many migrants moving through Hornsby Bend. Gather at 6:30 a.m. for light breakfast at Hornsby Bend in the Center for Environmental Research. Morning survey begins at 7 a.m. with tally at 11 a.m. Also from CER building, the afternoon survey is 4 p.m. to sundown.

May survey leader is Mikael Behrens - mobile phone: (512)431-9136. Participants can contact Mikael or just show up at 7am or 4pm.

Keith will have on display natural and manmade cavities that our Texas Cavity-Nesters prefer. Mounting poles, guards and other nestbox designs will be on display.
